imageRaspberry Fields: Rawhide Exhibit, Los Angeles

Our shingles were showcased in the Hirsuta's Rawhide exhibit this summer, in the prestigous Southern California Institute of Architecture. Raspberry Fields is a fresh and creative way to apply the use of curved shingles to achieve very unconventional effects, creating a truly spectacular result. An essential component in these geometrically complex, undulating roof lines are the curved cedar shingles, which set apart any roof from the ordinary. Here, the simple change in shape to one of the oldest cladding units in architecture produces a powerful amplification of the material presence of shingles. This summer our company was called upon to install a cottage roof at a beautiful estate in Barrington, Ilinois. The walls of the structure were built using tumbled river rock and surrounded by grand glass clerestory roofs and turrets, with a large swimming pool that wrapped in, out, and around the building. The architecture begged a storybook cottage roof, imagebut the existing roof was framed conventionally with straight and machined lines. After a couple design renderings, our team removed the existing roofing material down the deck, and re-framed the roof with rolling roof edges. We then steam-bent cedar shingles to fit the roofs edges, and using pre-dipped cedar shingles in a custom color that now adorns the roof. You can this and many more striking examples of these homes in our Cottages Photo Portfolio.
