Custom Teak Shingle Project

This custom teak shingle project required both sourcing highly custom shingles, and carefully planning and designing to carry out the architect’s vision.

This stunning private residence and teak-shingled pavilions is located in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, Great attention to detail and precision were taken during this roofing project, as not only were the product and install extremely custom, but there were time constraints to consider.

Prior to the install, rounds of designs , equations and mockups came together to ensure the design turned out perfectly.

Reclaimed, dragontooth teak shingles sourced from Thailand were used for the install. To streamline the process, the shingles were shipped directly to the jobsite and steam-bent onsite with a mobile steam-bending unit. This not only saved time, but allowed for the shingles to be bent to the correct radiuses to fit the varying shapes of the roofs.

The roof design called for a honeycomb pattern to be locked over the curve of the pavilion roof. To achieve the cascading effect of shingles, they were cut into graduated sizes of 3”, 4”, and 5” and steam-bent to allow the elliptical courses to fall flawlessly over the roofs’ curved surfaces.

Teak Shingle Layout

With teak being natural hardwood filled with oils and tannins which allow it to hold up against the elements, it did prove challenging to steam-bend. Install was meticulous as every piece had to be perfectly aligned, taking just over two months to complete.

The finished project is a true showcase of craftsmanship and endurance, blending artistry and engineering into a timeless architectural masterpiece.

The whole project came together seamlessly, blending teak’s longevity and careful craftsmanship to create a lasting architectural masterpiece.

The careful installation ensures this roof will bring beauty to the homeowners for years to come.
